Is Grease Monkey indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Grease Monkey is a hybrid: Leafly rates it mostly calming, Exotic Genetix lists it as 50% indica and 50% sativa, and AllBud and two seed sellers put it at 70% indica.1,2,3,4,5 Its parents are GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4) and Cookies and Cream, both cup winners, and it was bred by Exotic Genetix.1,6,7 One name causes confusion: Weedmaps files Grease Monkey under Grease Bucket, which Leafly lists as a different strain.8,9

The two parents

GG4, also called Original Glue and better known as Gorilla Glue, is GG Strains’ cross of Chem’s Sister, Sour Dubb and Chocolate Diesel; Leafly lists it as 63% indica and says it has long been one of the most searched-for strains on its site. It took first place at the 2014 Michigan and Los Angeles Cannabis Cups and at the High Times Jamaican World Cup in 2015.6,15

Cookies and Cream is Exotic Genetix’s own cross of Starfighter and an undisclosed GSC phenotype, and it took first place among hybrids at the 2014 Denver Cannabis Cup. Leafly lists its flavors as vanilla, nutty and chestnut.7

Grease Monkey or Grease Bucket? The accounts

The breeders agree on the parents. The confusion comes from one database that has merged the name with another strain.

We treat Grease Monkey as Exotic Genetix’s GG4 × Cookies and Cream, which every breeder listing fits. Leafly lists Garlic Cookies as another name for GMO Cookies, which puts Grease Bucket in the GMO family instead.18

How indica is it?

Accounts differ. Exotic Genetix’s spec on SeedFinder and Seeds Here Now’s listing of the original seeds call it a 50/50 hybrid; AllBud, Zamnesia and United Cannabis Seeds list 70% indica and 30% sativa.2,3,4,5,19 Leafly files it as a hybrid with mostly calming effects, and the effect descriptions we found lean heavy and sleepy (see effects).1,3,19

Seeds, versions and cuts

The original seeds are getting scarce. Exotic Genetix’s own shop lists its Grease Monkey, sold as Grease Monkey × Grease Monkey in regular 11-packs and feminized 6-packs, as retired, and Seeds Here Now sells sealed regular packs from the original production run as a vault release, with no restock possible.19,20

Other seed versions use the same two parents. SeedFinder lists five breeders’ Grease Monkey, from Exotic Genetix, Nirvana Seeds, Phat Panda, United Cannabis Seeds and Zamnesia; the four other than Exotic Genetix list only feminized seeds.4,5,17,21,22 Even within one seed line plants differ: High Times noted terpene profiles varying from phenotype to phenotype.16

What our lab data adds

On state lab certificates, 208 of our 576 tests carry a cut or phenotype number after the name, most often "#2" (172 tests, 169 of them from a single Maryland lab, with a median of 28.15%), then "#10" (19) and "#1" (15). The certificates do not say what the numbers mean.23

Our strict matching excluded a further 78 results (36 of them flower) whose names add another word, a cross or a backcross, such as the backcross "Grease Monkey BX" (3) and the cross "Mendo Breath x Grease Monkey" (2).23
